Happy Halloween! After class today, I went to this store called Ricky's that sells Halloween costumes. There was line to get into the store! Slackers! (including me). Well I bought a mask and a feather boa, and I got one for Johanna too, since we're going to watch the Village Halloween Parade tonight! It should be lots of fun. I'll take pictures! Winter Weather in New York Brrrr. It's cold!!! This California girl is not used to 40 degree weather. But I've been learning, so now I wear sweaters and scarves and gloves every day. It's all about layers. Unfortunately, it still gets pretty stuffy in the subway, but when you go upstairs onto the street, it's totally cold. "Heatwave" The elevator operator at the subway station was listening to a CD and "Heatwave" came on. Kinda made me laugh outloud because the song was completely inappropriate for the day. Oh... and eating ice cream? I saw a girl walking down broadway eating ice cream... Crazy. Extensions on Programming Assignments Don't you just love when you get an unexpected extension on an assignment you've been working on for the past 3 days? I had a Java assignment due tomorrow, and I was almost done... I just had one thing to fix, and my prof emails us and says it's due next Thursday instead! Yes! That means that I can watch Dawson's Creek tonight without worrying about what I need to do afterwards.... hehehe. Monday, October 28, 2002
It Was a Great Run I'm so sad that the Giants lost the World Series, but it was a really great postseason! Bonds definitely came through, as did all the other players, but we just didn't quite have enough to win against those darn Angels and their stupid rally monkey... But don't worry... Grand Opening of the Ice Rink at Rockefeller Center Today, I went to Rockefeller Center at 10:30am and waited 2 hours in the blistering cold to watch the opening of the ice rink! It was so beautiful. There were a lot of famous skaters, like Elvis Stojko, Victor Petrenko, Sasha Cohen, Emily Hughes (Sarah Hughes' sister) and Oksana Bayul. I even got Elvis Stojko's autograph after the show! And get this... My favorite Broadway actor, Adam Pascal, performed "New York State of Mind" live for the finale! I was so excited when he performed because he has the most amazing voice (He was Roger in Rent, and is in Aida). It was worth being so cold out there because he is my absolute favorite. I tried to catch him after the show, but he seemed to have disappeared. I BELIEVE! Tough loss for the Giants last night! 11-10! But a great battle. Now this is baseball! Shopping weekend I used my Friends & Family coupon at J Crew and bought a nice sweater. And I also went to H&M and bought 3 sweaters, a long black puffy jacket with a hood, a scarf, and a hat for the winter. I don't think I've ever had to buy seasonal clothing before. I mean, I wear pretty much the same stuff all year round in California. I'm starting to like the east coast seasons... Sunday, October 20, 2002
A World Series Weekend Congratulations to my team for winning Game 1! What an exciting game. It had my heart racing and I couldn't sit still through the 9th inning.... I love baseball! Chilly Weather It's been quite chilly over here this past week. Even though it's sunny, the wind chill factor brings the weather down a lot. I think I'm gonna go to J Crew and try to use my Friends & Family coupon to buy some more winter clothes. Video tapes Gotta go back to that 99cent store to stock up on video tapes. I'm taping all the World Series games! Filipino Restaurant in New York I had lunch with my family friend on Friday. We went to this Filipino restaurant in SoHo called Cendrillon. I had pancit bihon for $8.50. Pretty good stuff. It was a cute little place, but not too many people when we went. Thursday, October 17, 2002
Midterms are Over!!! I had my second (and last) midterm this morning and boy does it feel good to be done!!! I had my first one last night, which went pretty well. And I actually think the one this morning went pretty well too. But I won't get my hopes up too high, until I get my tests back. But right now, I'm so relieved and happy! It's the start of my weekend! What's a noreaster? Well, we had this big storm pass through the east coast on Wednesday and it's the first time I heard the word 'noreaster'. I still don't know exactly what it means, but I think it's pretty much a huge storm. I was scared to go outside, after hearing all the news stations say that the winds could go up to 50mph! But, alas, I had to go to class. The rain wasn't too bad, but the winds were crazy. I don't think they were as high as 50mph, but let's just say that my small little umbrella didn't make it through the storm very well. I need to buy one of those huge golf umbrellas, like the ones you get for free at Bay Meadows. I had one of those at home, but I didn't bring it. Darn. World Series -- All Weekend I think I have baseball-withdrawal. I haven't watched a baseball game in 3 days, so I watched a replay of Game 5, bottom of the 8th inning until the end. I still got teary-eyed when David Bell slid across home plate and all the Giants ran onto the field. I tried to look around in sports stores in New York for new Giants gear that said World Series 2002, but I guess no one here would want to buy stuff like that. (Although I saw maybe 2 people on campus sporting SF Giants gear - one guy had a cap and a sweatshirt! And my Java professor, from California, was late to class on Tuesday, saying that he has been recovering from celebrating the Giants victory! ) All I found was a regular jersey and a baseball cap. So instead, I ordered this shirt online. I hope it comes soon!!! Monday, October 14, 2002
Deceptive Sun I woke up this morning to a bright and sunny day! I was so happy that it wasn't raining anymore, and I was even considering wearing capris and a short-sleeved shirt.... And then I checked weather.com. Freaking 59 degrees high with a low of 45! And so I did the smart thing and bundled up, thankfully, because I walk outside and there is a sharp biting wind blowing. Cold. Cold. Cold. BRRRRR Busy Weekend Full of Old Friends and a Limo! I thought I would be bored this weekend and end up studying for my midterms all weekend, but somehow it didn't end up that way. On Saturday night, my friend Vanessa (who went to Santa Clara with Alan) was in town so we went out along with 6 other girls. It was a really random crowd, where someone knew at least one other person and but everyone eventually became linked after we went through the whole "Oh, where are you from?? Do you know this person? that person?" because most of them were originally from the bay area. Small world. We went to a bar called 1020 where we got $3 martinis and then headed over to another bar/club on the lower east side. Since there were eight of us, we were gonna take two cabs. So while waiting for the cabs, a limo pulled up and asked if we needed a ride. We asked how much it would cost and for the flat fee, it would've been the same as taking two cabs.... so we took the limo! My first time in a limo... It was pretty cool. My good friend from grammar school and high school Adrienne came to New York for the weekend from Boston, so we had lunch on Sunday. I got to meet her boyfriend that she has been going out with for two years now, but they live in Boston so this is the first time I got to meet him. I was happy to meet him because I think it is her first official boyfriend. They're cute together. Then Sunday night, I met up with my ex-coworker from Incyte, Audrey, who was in the city just for the day visiting from Philly (UPenn). I met up with her and her friend at Grand Central Station (felt like I was in a movie waiting for her) and we went down to the Village and at at this cool restaurant called "Boca Chica" which reminded me of Cha Cha Cha in San Francisco. Rain Rain Go Away! Today started the long weekend of rain to come in New York. Instead of spending my free day being a lazy bum, I went to campus and on my way back home, I found a 99cent store near my apartment. I love those stores... there was so much stuff that I needed, but I only ended up buying saran wrap, a baking tray, and a videotape for the grand total of $2.41. And on my walk back home, I saw that there is another 99cent store across the street, so maybe I'll check that one out later. On our way... We're on our way to the BIG series. I won't say anything more, because I don't want to jinx it... Study Study Study I've got midterms next week and a programming project due too. I guess it's good it's raining, so I'm not tempted to spend the weekend shopping or just doing nothing at Central Park. Back in New York I'm back and ready to blog! For the past two days, I've been pretty tired. I think it's because of jetlag or maybe it's because I went out last night. Johanna and I met up with a whole bunch of Bay Area folks who were in town, Daryl, Allen, Butch, Mike, Ricky, and Cynthia. It was fun, but definitely an adventure since it was a school night. Giants!!!!!! Congratulations to my Giants for winning the series against Atlanta! I actually get to watch the games now, since they are shown on TV here in New York. How exciting... I no longer have to listen to the game online and watch the cartoon version. Home Sweet Home Being back home was great! I got in at 1am on Friday morning and Alan picked me up from OAK. During the day, Kitchie and I went shopping and then my whole family saw "Sweet Home Alabama". That night Alan and I went down to San Jose's Fanny & Alexander to celebrate a friend's birthday. Saturday, we went to the Giants game, and unfortunately we lost. Why is it that whenever we go to the game, the Giants lose? Maybe I should just watch on TV, for the Giants' sake. Then we hung out with Rick, Eileen, Jane, and Gary at Rick's new place on Van Ness. On Sunday, we had a lunch for my mom's birthday and then watched the Giants win (on TV of course). Then it was back to OAK for my 10:30pm flight.... Quick weekend, but packed with events and seeing friends and family. Almost missed my stop! The subway ride from JFK to my stop is about 1.5 hours, and I was really tired on Monday morning, and I fell asleep. I wake up and the subway driver was announcing my stop! Short Week, Short Blogs Nothing quite exciting happened to me this week, as can be told from my very short blogs. My week is almost over, and then I get to go home! Not looking forward to my 4 assignments due next week, but definitely looking forward to this weekend! Giants Blast the Braves: 8-5! Did that sound like a newspaper headline? I was trying to use those active verbs. :) hehe. I'm so happy that we won. And plus, I got tickets for the game on Saturday... first row bleachers. I won't tell for how much, but it doesn't matter, because I'm going to be there! yeah! Warning to the Blog Police If I don't blog this weekend, that means I won't be sitting in front of my computer all day, like I usually do... but spending time with friend and family. Happy First of October! I can't believe it's already October. The weather here is getting colder and windier, but still sunny. I should enjoy the sun while it lasts. I think I'm going to sit on one of the lawns on the main campus and read. I see a lot of people doing that. Counting the days... I'm counting the days, hours, minutes that I get to go home!! |
