Sick! I'm sick. :( Have been for a couple days now. Sore throat, cought, cold. I went to the student health office today and saw a nurse practitioner. After talking about why I should do this and that, like drink water, take vitamins, gargle salt and water, get a humidifier, etc etc (for a really REALLY long time), I finally got a prescription for some cough medicine. I hope it goes away soon. Dinner for Restaurant Week Last night Johanna and I went to Icon at the W Hotel for dinner. It was really good! I had the clam chowder, steak (medium), and bread pudding with ice cream, plus a Lemondrop to drink. It was yummy. Relaxing weekend I think I'm going to rest and sleep this weekend. Snowflakes on your Eyelashes It was snowing today, another light flurry snow. I was walking around campus today and snowflakes started falling on my eyelashes and on my hair. I like the snow! Restaurant Week in NYC This week is Winter Restaurant Week 2003 which means that a whole bunch of nice restaurants are having fixed priced meals. A three-course lunch is $20.03 and a three-course dinner is $30.03. Johanna and I went to Terrace in the Sky for lunch today and it was gooood. I had the salad, pan seared salmon, and an apple tart with vanilla ice cream. The salmon was so good and flaky, with this cream sauce with potato and leeks. Johanna got the roasted chicken with mushrooms. Her's was good too. The restaurant is on the top floor of a building near campus, so there was a nice view. Dawson's Creek on DVD! Finally, they're putting the complete first season of Dawson's Creek on DVD! Click here to pre-order your set. It comes out on April 1st. Yay! I can't wait for tonight's episode. I love Eddie! Online Shopping I find myself looking for things online instead of going to stores to buy stuff, since it's so cold and I don't want to go outside. Plus, delivery to my door is better than lugging big things around town and on the subway. i.e. I bought a down comforter on ebay for $50! Now it'll be nice and cozy when I sleep. Hooked on Yahoo! Games I've played Blackjack, and then Kitchie got me hooked on Bounce Out and Literati (like Scrabble), and now Alex introduced me to Graffiti (like Pictionary!) Let it Snow! Today it started snowing again! But not a heavy snow... a light, flurry snow. It was wonderful!! And it was about 33 degrees today! Very warm! (Can you believe that I think 33 degrees is warm? Well, it is... compared to 15!) Superbowl Sunday I went over to Johanna's apartment to watch the Superbowl, and unfortunately the Raiders lost! I kept on cheering for the Buc accidentally though... I think it was the red jerseys. I kept on thinking they were the 49ers. We had pizza, beer, pasta, chips, and popcorn. Saturday night party Saturday night, we went out to a bar called Suite 16, which is a different place than where we usually go. The crowd was different, they didn't play too much hip hop... they actually played a lot of rock and a lot of 80s. It was Johanna's roommate's friend's birthday, so all of his friends were there. I miss my friends when we go out, because although I know some of the people there, I'm not really good friends with them, so it's different... I wished I was somewhere ... "where everybody knows your name..." Pantyhose, Thermals, Two Pairs of Socks, and I'm good to go! I tried something to beat the cold air... wearing pantyhose under my thermals under my pants. And it actually works! I felt much warmer and I didn't get cold at all! I don't have any tights, but maybe I should buy some, instead of wearing pantyhose. Until then, this will have to do... Do you know that feeling when... ...the weather outside is in the teens, and even though it's sunny, the chilly wind is blowing like mad, so that it feels like the weather is below zero? Your face is cold and chapped, you can't even draw breath because it's so cold and you feel like you've gotten the wind knocked out of you, and your fingers feel like they're going to fall off? .... Probably not! Because you people who are reading this are probably in California!!! It's FREEZING here!!! Other than that... Life is peachy. I had my second day of class, including my Database Systems class with Johanna. (It's good to know people in your classes.) After class we went to Gray's Papaya for 75cent hot dogs. Chicago! I went to Times Square to see if I could get rush tickets ($25) to see Kevin Richardson from the Backstreet Boys in his opening performance in Chicago, but they were all out. The nice box office guy said to come really early in the morning if I wanted them since they sell out quickly. They reserve the first row of the orchestra for rush tickets, so I think it would be worth it to get up early in the morning to wait in line. Maybe I'll see it this weekend... So, instead of seeing the musical, I went over to the Loews Theater in Times Square to see if Chicago was playing anytime within the hour. I told myself that I would watch it if there was a showing, and there was one at 2:10pm, so I bought a ticket. The movie was awesome! It's good I knew all the songs from the first time I saw the musical with Kitchie when she was here in August. And she burned me a copy of the CD which I was listening to this morning, actually. The movie house was packed, and thank goodness I didn't spend too much time at McDonald's before the show, so I got a good seat. Instruction Begins Classes begin tomorrow. I'm kinda excited to start classes again, so I could have something to do over here. I guess that's what I'm here in New York for, right? Reality Shows Is it me, or are there too many reality shows now? I have to admit - I DO watch Joe Millionaire and sometimes The Bachelorette, and definitely will watch American Idol when it starts tomorrow, but I saw a commercial for something called Bridezilla where they follow brides on their wedding days and see how they become "monsters" under all that stress, and another one Married By America where the public votes for two strangers to get married on TV and see if it lasts. Hmm... sounds crazy, but I wonder if I'll end up watching them too. Back to Cooking I'm back to cooking for myself now. I made Pasta Primavera with broccoli and turkey. Yum. Sunday, January 19, 2003
I'm BAAAAAACK! I'm back in New York where the first thing I notice is, of course, the weather! Cold! Great vacation! I had a great vacation in California for the 4 weeks I was there. Lots of events and hanging out with friends and family. Christmas, New Year's, Heidi's 18th birthday party, Alan's Cable Car Party, Snowboarding (twice!), Johanna's birthday dinner, Rick's birthday dinner, and my going away dinner. If you want to see pics, check out the ultimate picture website, http://www.alanabar.com/ Not-so-Super Shuttle I took a Super Shuttle from JFK to my apartment and it took around 2 and a half hours! My flight arrived at 4:15, got my bag by 4:30, got on the shuttle at 4:50, and got home around 7pm. I was the first one to get on and the last one to get off. The driver kept on taking the inroads instead of staying on the freeway because there was so much traffic, but I think it ended up being slower. Oh well. I'm home sweet home. Golden Globes and Raiders Football I'm watching the Golden Globes and the Raiders game simultaneously. It looks like the Raiders are going to win and meet good old coach "Chucky" in the SuperBowl. Happy New Year! Welcome to 2003! Why am I not in New York? Just a thought.... seeing how this will be the only year I live in New York, why didn't I stay there and celebrate in Times Square, since I would have a place to crash afterwards? I know why.... it's called family, friends, and Alan. :) New Year's Resolutions I'll be brief: 1) Exercise. Go to the school gym. 2) Read. Finish The Lord of the Rings trilogy that I started last year right after the first movie came out. (I read The Hobbit and am halfway through The Fellowship of the Ring.) 3) Explore New York. The months are counting down and I should take it all in while I can. Here's to a great year! Cheers! |
