Musical Mania!! Johanna and I saw Hairspray tonight. It was awesome!!! I love seeing musicals that I haven't seen before... That makes it six different musicals within the past two weeks!! I guess I'm working towards my goal to see all the musicals on Broadway before I leave. Too bad I didn't see Oklahoma! before it closed last weekend. Oh well. Flower Drum Song is closing in mid-march, but it's ok, since I've seen it twice. The softer side I was sitting on the subway today and there was a police officer standing next to me. Besides being about six inches away from his gun, I looked over and saw that he had a picture of a red-headed woman taped to the inside of his policeman hat. How sweet. :) DVD DB Joey set up a cool DVD database, so now we know who has which and from whom we can borrow which DVDs. Great idea Joey! Tuesday, February 25, 2003
Locked Out!! So I went to KMart this morning to buy an extra pillow, because I'll be having a lot of guests coming to visit me this semester (Kitchie on Friday!), and I was wearing my coat and I put my wallet, keys, and phone in the pockets. I got back home to drop off my stuff right before class, and then somehow I decided to wear another coat to class. So I put that one on, rushed out, and right when the door slammed behind me, I just knew I forgot my keys! My roommate was home, so I was banging on the door for about 5 minutes, but I guess she couldn't hear me because she was in her room with music really loud. So I just decided to go to class, and pray that she would be home. I came back, she wasn't home! But I called security and they let me in... *WHEW* I thought I would have to spend hours at the library (which I probably should do anyway) waiting for her to get home. ESP? Sometimes I feel like I see things about to happen in my dreams. Well, not EXACTLY what's going to happen, but signs. For example, last week, I dreamed that there would be a fire and the next day, there was a refinery fire on Staten Island. And in class today, my prof kept using the word "onerous" which triggered a memory that I had a dream last night where that exact word was used. Weird huh? Some people don't even remember their dreams. Some of mine I remember as if they really happened. Sunday, February 23, 2003
Thoroughly Excellent! Johanna and I watched the musical Thoroughly Modern Millie yesterday afternoon, and it was a really great musical! The story was interesting, the set/costumes were very bright and colorful, the songs were great and the dancing was excellent!! I had never heard about it until I came to New York, but I would definitely recommend watching it if you can get tickets. Johanna and I were in the 6th row center of the orchestra! No subway The 1/9 line from my apartment to the downtown campus was closed down for a while today, right at the exact moment when I needed to take it to go to mass on campus. So instead I took the bus, which got really full since all the people in the subway stations had to out upstairs and take the bus too. Windy I'm glad I'm indoors when it's so windy like it is outside right now. It's howling and banging against my window! Sounds scary. Brownies but not chocolate? I am baking brownies right now and I can't wait til they're done so I can eat them warm with milk. Funny how I don't of myself as someone very fond of chocolate, yet I love brownies and buy 3 Musketeers bars constantly. Hmm... Maybe my taste buds are changing. Saturday, February 22, 2003
Raining Cats & Dogs It's raining today and I think will rain all weekend. But maybe it's a good thing, so that all the snow will wash away. Or it might just make it even more slushy. We'll just have to see. Liz's Birthday Party Thursday night, I went to Liz's Birthday Party at a bar/lounge called Climate Eight. It was a really cool lounge, really good music, and dancing! Did I ever mention how I notice that only at certain places do people dance here? Maybe it depends on where you go, but I asked someone about it and they said in New York you need a license if people are going to dance in your bar/club. Weird huh? I wonder if it's like that in San Francisco. It doesn't seem like it. Anyway, seeing old Cal people was cool... Liz, Cynthia, Ricky, Bryan Lucena, Ray Madronio. I had a fun time :) Library Amazing how much you can get done if you just sit yourself down at the library and work. I went there yesterday after class (around 3pm) to work on my essay due tomorrow and I finished it. It was already 7pm by the time I left!! But at least I don't have to worry about it today. Now I can just go watch "Thoroughly Modern Millie" with Johanna and not worry about homework. I got some tickets on ebay, so we're going to the matinee show today! I love musicals! Have a good weekend! Thursday, February 20, 2003
Slush The streets are still filled with snow, but today was really sunny and warm (~45) so the snow was melting and there was all the dirty slush all over the ground. You can see people watching where they step, just to be sure they don't walk right in the middle of a big puddle of slush. Same Old, Same Old This week has been pretty uneventful for me, ever since the big blizzard on Monday. Just class, and more class. Reality Show Syndrome The week of reality show finales... and they were great!! The people that I picked both won on Joe Millionaire and The Bachelorette. I hope Ryan and Trista stay together. They're cute. Evan and Zora...?? Hmm... Not sure about that one. Monday, February 17, 2003
Class cancelled! Yay! My class today was cancelled because of the crazy blizzard! It looks so scary outside, and sounds scary too. I'm glad I don't have to brave the weather today! Safely home Alan got home safely early this morning, after an hour flight delay! He missed the big storm by a couple hours!! Musical Weekend! Get this... I saw 4 musicals in 5 days... Crazy! I love watching musicals, and since Alan came over this weekend, we saw 3 of them. I love Student Rush tickets! You buy them the day-of the show and they're $25! On Wednesday, Johanna and I saw Les Miserables; Thursday, Alan and I saw Cabaret with Neil Patrick Harris ("Doogie Howser, MD"!); Friday, Alan and I saw Flower Drum Song for Valentine's Day; and Saturday, the three of us watched Chicago with Kevin Richardson! (my favorite from the Backstreet Boys!) It was really good! I love watching musicals. I better take advantage of being in New York and see all of them while I'm here. Snowstorm A snowstorm just started tonight. I brought Alan to JFK for his flight at 9:30pm, and I don't think it took off until 11pm! It's been extremely cold this weekend, which was a big shocker to Alan and even to me! I can't wait until the spring! I think the groundhog saw his shadow 2 weeks ago, so that means four more weeks of winter from now, right? Food Weekend too! Other than the musicals, Alan and I went around town and ate at different restaurants. On Valentine's Day, we had ribs at Dallas BBQ before the show. We also went to Serendipity for dessert on Saturday, since Alan loves that movie and wanted to go to the restaurant and have their famous "Frrrrozen Hot Chocolate". And for lunch today, we went to Cafe Con Leche, which was really good Cuban food. We used a coupon from the New York Entertainment.com book that Kitchie bought for me that has a whole bunch of coupons! Holiday? Weird that one of my classes tomorrow was cancelled and one wasn't. At least the one that was cancelled was in the morning, so I can finish my homework due in the afternoon :) Have a good week! Monday, February 10, 2003
Finished LOTR Part I! I finished reading Part One of The Lord of the Rings trilogy books. Wow! It feels good to finish a book and come to that last page... Now on to the second book... It's pretty easy reading once you get into it... besides all the weird names of places and people you have to remember. And it's actually a good thing to have something to read on the subway. Even if it's only a 15 minute ride, like it is from my apartment to the main campus. My goal is to read all three by the time the third movie comes out. At least for one of the movies I can say that I read the book first. Now I know what they mean when they say the book is better than the movie. Almost V-Day! It's almost Valentine's Day, which means Alan is almost here. :) yay. Friday, February 07, 2003
Central Park in the snow! It was snowing today! About 3-5 inches fell today. It wasn't that cold though, so after class in the afternoon, I went to Central Park. I walked the length of 59th Street to 81st Street through the park and took some pics of the snow-covered trees and buildings. I'm gonna miss the snow when it's gone! I can't get enough of it. I smile when I'm walking around the streets and it's snowing. People must think I'm weird. Can't stay away from shopping!!! .... for groceries! For some reason, I have a tendency to go into the Gristedes near my apartment every time I walk by it. I always think of something to buy... Today I bought a whole bunch of vegetables for different dishes that I have in mind ... green beans and tomatoes for sinigang, sayote and ginger for tinola, mushrooms for my pork chop dish, and broccoli for this stir fry that I'm gonna make with black bean sauce. We'll see about when I cook these.... But I'm already prepared! Spiderman I finally watched Spiderman today, from the divx files that Kitchie downloaded and copied over to my computer when I was at home. Great movie! Parts of it were filmed on the Columbia campus too... another movie I need to add to my NYC movie collection. Pics I took! Here is an ofoto album of random pics of New York in February. Click here. Enjoy! Tuesday, February 04, 2003
Wacky Weather It seems like I'm always talking about the weather.... Today was weird. Rain in the morning, warm sun in the afternoon, and howling wind at night. The wind is so strong that it's making noises outside and shaking my window. Thank goodness I'm inside. Cheap groceries! I went to the grocery store today to buy my weekly groceries, like bread, orange juice, water, milk, bananas, and I saw that they had the "Trial Size" of Honey Nut Cheerios again! They didn't have it for a while, but today they did. I like the trial size because it has about 6 servings and the cereal doesn't get stale because it doesn't last too long. It usually is $1.19, but today when they rang it up, it was 2 for $1.00. Fifty cents each! I bought one, but then I went back to the store after class and bought 3 more boxes... Need to stock up. Maybe I'll go back tomorrow... Happy 38 month anniversary! See you soon! Monday, February 03, 2003
Chinatown for Chinese New Year On Sunday, I met up with Johanna in Chinatown to walk around and watch the parade that was going on. There were a lot of people on the streets, and most of them were popping those little things that you throw down on the ground that make noise. Some people were throwing them on other people, but I guess they don't hurt too much if they pop on you. We went to the Golden Unicorn Restaurant for dim sum, and waited about half an hour. There were so many people at all the restaurants! The dim sum was good, and pretty cheap. We ordered about 5 different dishes for $20 total. After lunch, we shopped at the Asian grocery stores for cheap groceries and fish/shrimp. A new week First day of the week and already lots of stuff to do. More homework being assigned, and I met with my research advisor for the first time for my semester project. I'm pretty excited to get hands-on experience working on a project instead of just taking classes. Re-arranging my room Over the weekend, I cleaned the apartment and re-arranged my furniture a little bit. My bed is now against the wall opposite the window, which is the farthest it could be from the cold night air. Even though I'm still a little sick, I'm a lot warmer now. Plus, my down comforter helps too. I think I need to decorate my walls a bit more though. I need to find some cheap posters or framed pics. Like the new look? Alan wanted me to change my old, boring template. :) |
